Persuasive Writing
This week we learned about persuasive writing, the purpose of this text is convincing the reader of the argument that you are exposing. There are a few elements that your composition must have in order to make it successful: a hook that will catch your readers' attention, background information, thesis statement, evidence supporting your ideas and a good summary with future implications. As part of the activity, we had to write a letter to the principal where we will be requesting changes to the school rules or policy, the following is my work:
Hello Ms. Amaya,
I hope this message finds you well, I would like to start with wishing you a good rest of the week. I had taken this opportunity to reach out to you in regards to the University code of conduct for students. I have found the journey of going through the articles truly fascinating. I don’t particularly enjoy reading the code of conduct of every institution I had attended during the past years, however It has caught my attention two subsections in articles 12 and 13.
The subsection “d” in article 12, talks about the attire worn by students within the institution’s premises, this is completely understandable since the University is a place to learn and not a place of recreation. However, I failed to see what is considered by the institution as acceptable attire per the University standards. I understand that it would be highly undesirable to have students using revealing clothing around the campus, but I would like to see some examples of pieces of clothing or elements that would be considered inappropriate for the code of conduct in the same article.
Moving forward to the subsection “r” in article 13, it talks about how it is considered a serious offense to talk or make comments that would harm the honor or image of the institution in mass media, social media, etc. Nothing positive will ever result from having students spreading false information or negative allegations against the university in the public. Although, the sanction towards a grave offense is clear, what is not clear are the other channels available to the students to express their discomfort or feedback towards the university methods in any aspect, It’ll be convenient to have a place or channel of communication where there could be a discussion and assurance that the matter at hand can be put under investigation and get feedback from it. I will look forward to hear your thoughts about what was exposed in this letter.
Sincerely
Steffany Esperanza
